My 2008 Financial Goal: Pay cash for a new car

Patrick at Cash Money Life is giving away a 4GB iPod Nano as an incentive to get readers to share their 2008 Financial Resolution.

I have several financial goals for 2008, but the one I want to share is my goal to pay cash for a new car. I've mentioned before that we are ready to trade in our 1997 Honda Accord, and that after weighing the pros and cons of a new car versus a used car, we've decided to go ahead with a new car that we'll drive for at least 10 years.

We haven't decided on a model yet, but we have set a budget of $25,000. This means we won't pay more than $25,000 for the car, and hopefully it'll be a few thousand less. (The budget for our 6-cylinder 2003 Nissan Altima was also $25,000, and we got it for a little under $23,000.)

We'll get several thousand for the trade-in. I know we could probably make more money by selling the car ourselves but we just don't want to deal with the hassle, especially because neither of us knows much about cars. With two young boys, minimizing the time and stress spent on things we don't enjoy is high on our list of priorities. Unfortunately, Edmunds.com lists the trade-in value at $3,150, while Kelley Blue Book lists the trade-in at $4,485 to $5,520. That's a pretty big difference, but to be conservative, I'll count on a $2,500 trade-in. If we get more, that'll be great.

That leaves us with $22,500 to save up. We've actually started saving already and are saving aggressively for this purchase. In fact, we've cut back on the amount we pay on my student loans in order to beef up our savings for the car.

I'm keeping an open mind, though. With the economy having a rough time, it's possible that we'll be able to get a fantastic financing deal when we buy the car next year. (Our Nissan Altima was financed through the dealer at 1.9% APR.) If that's the case, we'll opt to finance the car and put the cash toward my student loans instead.

Amazon Shopping Tip: Combine PriceDrop with Amazon's 30-Day Price Drop Guarantee

Yesterday, Raising 4 Boys wrote about Amazon's 30-day price drop guarantee, which I was only vaguely familiar with. The Raising 4 Boys post contains a helpful step-by-step guide on how to get a refund. Since I make quite a few purchases there, I was pretty happy to learn how to take advantage of the guarantee. I also remembered that the Firefox extension PriceDrop was made to take advantage of the guarantee. PriceDrop tracks Amazon's price for items you select and notifies you if the price goes down. It's just another reason to use Firefox.

Great deal on Parents Magazine

I've quoted from Parents Magazine enough times that regular readers of CFO probably know I'm a regular reader of Parents. I just found a great deal via SlickDeals: a 1-year subscription for $2.08. You can order up to five years for a mere total of $10.40. The deal is at Publication Station, which I've never heard of but looks legit. (Don't hold me liable if you have problems, though!) To get the deal, add the magazine to your cart, and then check out. After you enter your billing info, you'll get to a page where you can enter a coupon code: enter the code PARENTS. For extra security, pay through PayPal (this is what I did, using a credit card) or get a one-time use number for your credit card through the issuer's web site (I didn't do that this time but I've done it before and it's very easy). I renewed my subscription with this deal, so I'm set for many years now!

Or, you can head over to Amazon and pay $9.97 for a one-year subscription:

Boycotting chocolate? Just about!

I love chocolate. If I were a poet, I'd write an ode to it, but since I'm not, let me just say that I have tried to stop eating it but never succeeded for long. Because of chocolate, I understand - at least a little - what it's like to be a smoker trying to give up cigarettes. I know chocolate is harmful to my health, especially in the quantities that I consume over the course of a day, week, month, year. It's certainly part of the reason why I have some pounds to lose. But even knowing that it would be better for my health hasn't been motivation enough for me to stop eating it.

Earlier today, though, I read Adrienne's post about the connection between chocolate and child slavery at Baby Toolkit. And I'm appalled to discover that my chocolate addiction has been facilitating child slavery in Africa.

The remedy? Why, a boycott, of course! Adrienne's asking that people avoid chocolate gifts this holiday season. So I hereby pledge to buy only fair-trade chocolate products from now on (she says those are untainted). Fortunately, Green LA Girl recently directed me to a fair trade chocolate gift basket that I'll be sending to my chocolate-loving friend.

I also promised Adrienne that I will try to get my sons' daycare to terminate their See's Candies fund raisers that are held every Easter/Passover and Christmas/Hanukkah season. I know there are other fund-raising options out there because we've discussed them in the past, so we should be able to find something more compatible with our school's goals.

I'm not giving up chocolate completely, but I am going to do my part to reduce child slavery. Are you?

Review: Kellogg's Special K Chocolatey Delight cereal

You may have seen commercials for the new Kellogg's cereal, Special K Chocolatey Delight. The cereal is touted as a dessert substitute to help you avoid greater temptations.

I wouldn't call this cereal dessert, but it is a nice breakfast cereal. I mix it up with some Cheerios, since they're lower in sugar and I have always have some on hand for Tyler. If you like regular Special K and you like chocolate, you'll love this. If you don't like regular Special K but you do like chocolate, you'll probably like this, since there's a good amount of chocolate in it.

Even if you don't like Special K or chocolate but you do like sugary cereal, you'll probably like this. At least, that's my conclusion after watching Marc become the primary Special K Chocolatey Delight eater in our house. I actually started to get a little bit annoyed that he was eating all of *my* cereal.

Especially because Special K Chocolatey Delight is not the cheapest cereal at Target or Ralphs. At Target, it's $3.24 per box, whereas cereals like Cookie Crisp and Frosted Mini-Wheats are $2.34 and $2.54 per box, respectively. At Ralphs, a box of Special K Chocolatey Delight is over $4. I get an occasional coupon from the Sunday paper, but we eat more than an occasional box of cereal.

So I was happy to find a deal at Amazon that works out to $2.74 per box. Amazon has a pack of four boxes for $15.95, which isn't a great deal by itself. But if you buy $29 worth of select Kellogg's products, you get an instant $10 with code HEALTHYB (through Nov. 30). So I bought eight boxes for a total of $21.90, or $2.74 per box.

I realize this isn't the best deal as far as cereal in general goes. But Marc and I are relatively picky eaters, and cereal is a relatively inexpensive breakfast. For us, it's worth it.

Get a $100 Spa Treatment from Walgreens

I learned about Walgreens Spa Rewards today via Wise Bread. Basically, buying 2 of the participating products manufactured by Wyeth gets you $50 worth of spa treatment and buying 4 products gets you $100 worth. You have to jump through some hoops to redeem the $100, but when I called, the woman said there was no such thing as a "participating spa" and I can choose the spa I go to.

And I know exactly where I want to go: Burke Williams. There's one not too far from my house and the treatments I've gotten there have been very relaxing, even luxurious. I'm not sure what else I'll have done, but I have been longing for a good brow-waxing for a while now.

I don't usually shop at Walgreens, although there's a nice-looking one on the way to my in-laws' house. And Kacie at Sense to Save has piqued my interest in Walgreens with her posts about the great deals to be had there. So I'm going to see if I can find some Advil coupons and then head out to Walgreens before November 24.

Gift Idea for a Chocoholic

I mentioned yesterday that Vosges chocolates were extremely disappointing but I found another chocolatier for my chocoholic friend's birthday gift this year. I think Norman Love Confections was a recommendation I came across on the Cooking Light bulletin boards. Unlike the Vosges chocolates, the Norman Love chocolates got rave reviews for both appearance and taste. In fact, I've been tempted to buy some for myself but the price keeps me in check ($22 for a 10-piece box, plus shipping). However, if you're looking for a special holiday gift of chocolates, I highly recommend Norman Love.

Bargain Alert: Graco Metrolite less than half-price

I've posted previously that I got a Graco Metrolite when Tyler was born and told you that I really like it. I still do, and I had a "doh!" moment when I realized that it was easy to work around one of the big concerns I had about the stroller, that the five-point harness would be irritatingly difficult to fasten on a regular, constant basis. But now that Tyler sits in the stroller instead of in his infant car seat, I simply fasten only the waist and center straps, leaving the shoulder straps untouched (they don't seem to bother Tyler).

You can now get the Graco Metrolite LXI strollerfor $89.99 plus $7.95 shipping at Amazon (sold by a third-party; list price is $189). I paid $120 for my Metrolite and I'm sure it was a lesser model than this one. Via Baby Cheapskate.

Review: Vosges Chocolates - A tale of disappointment

I've seen Vosges Haut-Chocolat featured on TV several times in the last four or five years, including multiple times on the food network. The founder, Katrina Markoff, has also been a judge on Iron Chef America. Vosges is known for its unique flavor combinations, particularly an unusual use of spices. I have a friend, C., who is a self-described chocoholic and also extremely difficult to shop for since she is one of those people who has everything. Last winter, I hit upon the idea of sending her chocolates for a Christmas gift, and it seemed natural to send her a box of Vosges.

C. was thrilled when the chocolates arrived, but less enthused when I talked to her later. She said they tasted just okay and that See's Candies chocolates were actually better.

Shortly after I placed the order for C., we began receiving Vosges catalogs in the mail. The pictures and descriptions are amazing. Unable to resist the temptation, I headed out to Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills, which sells a few Vosges products. I was hoping for the Caramel Marshmallows and a Macha Tea Exotic Candy Bar but since neither of those were available, I took home a box of Caramel Toffee. It was so disappointing. C.'s friend actually makes much better toffee that disappears in a matter of days in our house. The Vosges toffee lingered for months.

Although I'll never order from Vosges again, we do still enjoy receiving their catalogs - they really are food porn. And the best part is, we're not even tempted anymore.
