Review: West Bend 4-Quart Slow Cooker

I love this slow cooker and use it several times a week for baby food as well as family meals. I used to have a Hamilton Beach 6-quart slow cooker, but I never really liked it. It felt flimsy and the lid never fit correctly.

But my West Bend 4-quart slow cooker has been fantastic. It's much sturdier, the lid fits correctly, and 4 quarts is a better size for our family. Actually, I like this slow cooker so much that it's my second one - I ruined the crock that came with my first one by leaving tap water in it for several weeks to warm Alex's bottles during those early days when breastfeeding wasn't going well and we had to supplement. The tap water ended up leaving a hard crust all around the inside of the crock that I couldn't get off. In fact, I think so highly of this slow cooker that I even got one for my mom.

The removable stoneware crock makes prep and clean up extremely easy. I often load it up the night before and park it in the fridge, then pop it into the cooker in the morning on the way out the door. After dinner, both the lid and the crock go into the dishwasher. Even when food has gotten stuck to the sides, I've never had a problem getting it off.

The 4-quart size usually makes 4 to 6 main dish servings, so I can see myself getting a larger crock pot when the boys are a little older and eating more. Until then, I'll continue to rely on this extremely affordable and reliable version.

Coke: $1 for a 12-pack at Target

Yup, you read that right! I just picked up four 12-packs of Diet Coke for $1 per pack at Target. They are on sale for 4 for $10, which is an excellent deal by itself. But each box has a peel-off coupon for $1.50 off that you can hand to the cashier when you check out. I didn't see any quantity limits, but check the store for any restrictions.

Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium Crib Toy - Only $11.99

It was only after Tyler was born that I learned that several friends loved this toy, and I was sorely tempted to buy one for Tyler but didn't want to spend $50 on it. If it had been $11.99 as it is now, I would have bought it in a heartbeat (in fact, I just got one for my cousin's new baby). One of my friends put it on the changing table and it made changing Tyler's diaper a breeze since he was so distracted and lay perfectly still while staring at it.

Review: Fisher Price Healthy Care Booster Seat

Originally posted on Chief Family Officer.

This booster seat from Fisher Price has gotten a lot of use. I like that it folds up compactly, with the tray attached, and that one of the straps used to secure it to a chair doubles as a carrying strap. I also like that much like the regular Healthy Care high chair, the tray for the booster seat can be sterilized in the dishwasher. The tray also has a dishwasher-safe cover for extra protection. Additionally, the seat itself is easy to wipe clean. The tray and back can be removed for an older child so the seat can be used as a booster seat - in fact, we use this at the dining table for Alex now.

Unlike the First Years' seat, the Fisher Price seat does not recline, so it's not suitable for a baby who can't sit up straight, and it's not likely a baby would be able to fall asleep and be comfortable in this booster seat. I do wish there were a place to clip toys on to so they didn't fall on the floor.

Overall, I highly recommend the Fisher Price booster seat for any baby who can sit up straight.

Review: The First Years Infant-to-Toddler Reclining Feeding Seat

Originally posted on Chief Family Officer.

I got this portable high chair to take to restaurants for Alex to sit in. It fastens pretty securely to a kitchen or dining chair, has a nice reclining feature for younger babies, and a tray that's not pictured. My biggest complaint is that the tray angle is dependent on the seat angle - if a baby can't sit up unsupported, the seat has to be reclined, but that means the tray is also angled, rather than parallel to the floor. This makes the tray a lot less useful during feedings and even for play, since anything on it rolls toward baby. I love that the seat is really light, but it's pretty bulky for carrying around to restaurants. Because of that, this chair has ended up as the highchair at my in-laws' house, and it works well for that. In fact, if you don't want to spend the money on a regular high-chair, this would be a very acceptable cost-efficient alternative.
